Siberian Tiger
Classification: Carnivora/Felidae/Panthera
Size: Body length approx. 2.5 meters
Habitat: Primorsky and Khabarovsk regions of the Russian Far East, and the Siberian and Ussuri River basins
The Siberian tiger is the largest subspecies of tiger. Because it lives in extremely cold regions, it has longer fur than other subspecies. Illegal logging and poaching for its fur and bones, which are used in traditional medicine, continue to threaten the species. Only around 500 are thought to remain in the wild, and it is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Each tiger is thought to need around 1,000 square kilometers of forest—about half the area of Tokyo. Logging in Primorsky Krai has reduced the taiga by as much as 30%, further threatening its habitat.
