The hammer-shaped head has a central indentation, with the eyes at either end projecting forward. This shark occurs in coastal waters of tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions worldwide, from the surface to depths of 275 m.
Although population declines have been noted, the extent is not fully understood. Hammerhead sharks in the northwest Atlantic have reportedly declined by as much as 89% as a result of overfishing.
