Classification: Sphenisciformes/Spheniscidae/Spheniscus
Size: Body lengthapproximately 70centimeters
Habitat: Coastal waters of South America
The Humboldt Penguin is a medium-sized penguin, about 70 cm long, and is reportedly the most commonly kept penguin species in Japan. It lives along the relatively warm Pacific coast of South America, from Peru to Chile, following the Humboldt Current. Although penguins are often associated with Antarctica, the Humboldt Penguin tolerates heat well and does not thrive in extreme cold. In Japan, it can be kept without the highly specialized temperature control needed for some other species.
