Giant Panda
Classification: Carnivora/Ursidae/Ailuropoda
Size: Body length approx. 1.5 meters
Habitat: Mountainous areas at elevations of 1,300–3,500 m in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces in southwestern China
Its sharply contrasting black-and-white coat makes it instantly recognizable, and its charming appearance has made it a favorite around the world. Its name is derived from a Nepalese word meaning “one that eats bamboo.”
Its main food is bamboo stems, leaves, and shoots, although it occasionally eats insects and small mammals. In addition to five fingers, its forefeet have a protrusion formed from a wrist bone, known as a sixth finger. Another protrusion on the little-finger side is sometimes called a seventh finger. Hair on the soles helps protect against cold and provides traction in snow. The Giant Panda’s sharp canine teeth show that, despite its bamboo-based diet, it belongs to the order of carnivorous mammals.
