Western Lowland Gorilla
Classification: Primates/Hominidae/Gorilla
Size: Height approx. 180 cm
Habitat: Tropical rainforests of Central Africa
It is one of the largest primates living today. All gorillas kept in zoos in Japan are Western Lowland Gorillas. Its body hair is relatively short, while the head is black with reddish-brown tones, and a small projection at the tip of the nose is distinctive. Although it may look fierce, it is naturally gentle and not aggressive. Its diet consists mainly of roots, shoots, fruit, and bark, making it largely vegetarian.
