A small theropod dinosaur that lived in Mongolia, China, and nearby regions during the Late Cretaceous. Its most distinctive feature was the enormous sickle-shaped claw on the second toe of each hind foot, which may have been used to subdue prey.
Feather impressions have also been found in fossils discovered in recent years, strengthening the evidence that Velociraptor was feathered.
Interview with Supervisor Kazunari Araki
- Velociraptor, distinguished by the large, sharply curved claw on each hind foot, has joined the Vinyl Model series. Mr. Araki, what are your impressions of Velociraptor?
- Velociraptor, or “raptor,” became famous through the Jurassic Park films. It is cool and intelligent, and in the latest Jurassic World films it has become so popular that it nearly rivals Tyrannosaurus. However, the raptors in those films are modeled on the North American Deinonychus.
- You sculpted the Velociraptor model. What story or ideas informed the sculpture, and what were the main challenges, highlights, or details you would like people to notice?
- Velociraptor was smaller than Deinonychus, and fossil evidence shows that it likely had feathers. Its head was also somewhat more slender, so I sculpted the figure as a feathered dinosaur.
- The Velociraptor Vinyl Model has a color scheme reminiscent of birds. What image or concept inspired this choice?
- I imagined a raptor bird of prey. I covered the body in feathers, gave the forelimbs wing-like feathers with sharp claws, and added tail feathers to suggest an animal threatening an opponent. I aimed for colors that were neither too flashy nor too subdued.
