The Gunma Prefectural Museum of Natural History celebrates its 30th anniversary this year since its opening in October 1996. To commemorate this, we are holding the 30th Anniversary Special Exhibition (74th exhibition) "Dinosaurs of the Jurassic Period in North America"!

The late Jurassic period of the Mesozoic Era was a time when dinosaurs flourished as the rulers of the Earth. Like the Camarasaurus, which is a highlight of our museum's collection, dinosaurs such as Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Diplodocus that inhabited North America at the time, along with other terrestrial creatures from that era, will gather at the Gunma Prefectural Museum of Natural History! We will introduce a glimpse into the diverse creatures that once existed on the North American continent and their connections.

Furthermore, fossils from Solnhofen, Germany, famous as a "fossil mine," will be exhibited to showcase the diverse marine life of the same period. In addition, with the full cooperation of The Children's Museum of Indianapolis in the United States, with which our museum has a partnership agreement, fossils of dinosaurs excavated in Wyoming, USA, by the "Mission Jurassic" research project centered at their museum, will be exhibited in Japan for the first time. We will unveil the forefront of excavation and research in the Morrison Formation, a late Jurassic stratum that has been continuously studied for over 150 years.
