The head is broad, the upper jaw is U-shaped, and the central ridge is short. The dorsal fin is small, less than 0.25 m, and located about three-quarters of the way back along the body. The body is dark grayish-blue with pale mottling. The pointed flippers are white underneath. The baleen plates, up to 0.9 m long, are dark black, with coarse bristles, numbering 270–400 on each side. The throat grooves, numbering 55–88, extend at least to the navel. It is primarily pelagic but is sometimes seen near coasts and in shallow water. It migrates and is usually solitary or found in groups of two or three.
