The head and beak are short. The flippers are long and taper toward the tips. The dorsal fin is high, sickle-shaped, and located near the middle of the body, with a pattern resembling the blade of a sickle. Its color pattern is distinct: the back is black, the sides around the flippers are grayish-white, and pale stripes run along the sides. The underside is white. The snout is black, with a dark stripe extending from the mouth toward the flippers. It is generally pelagic but also occurs in deep coastal waters and forms large groups.
