Polar Bear
Classification: Carnivora/Ursidae/Ursus
Size: Total length approx. 2 meters
Habitat: Northern North America, northern Eurasia, and the Arctic
Its white fur gives it the familiar name “white bear.” It is the largest member of the bear family. Body size varies by habitat, and populations living in Russia’s Chukchi Sea region are thought to grow the largest.
Polar bears inhabit areas with pack ice and coastal regions. They move south as sea ice advances in winter and north as it retreats in summer. In some areas, they dig well-ventilated dens to shelter from direct sunlight, weather, and predators.
Compared with other bears, it has a relatively small head but a long neck. Its short ears are adapted to cold climates. The long neck and streamlined body with a small head are considered adaptations for swimming, and it can swim through icy seas for hours. It also has relatively keen eyesight for a bear.
Among bears, the polar bear is the most carnivorous species, with teeth more specialized for meat-eating than those of the brown bear.
