King Penguin
Classification: Sphenisciformes/Spheniscidae/Aptenodytes
Size: Body lengthapproximately 90centimeters
Habitat: Subantarctic islands in the South Atlantic and Indian oceans, between 45° and 55° south latitude
The King Penguin is the second-largest penguin species, measuring about 85–95 cm long and weighing 10–16 kg.
Names vary by location: populations in the South Atlantic are called the eastern King Penguin subspecies, while those in the Indian Ocean are called the western King Penguin subspecies. Its flippers are larger than those of the Emperor Penguin.
Adult penguins appear to regard the area they can reach by turning their necks as their territory. At breeding sites, adults stand in rows with fairly even spacing.
Studies suggest that climate change may reduce food supplies for King Penguins living near Antarctica, potentially putting some populations at risk of extinction.
