This is a vinyl figure of Deinocheirus, which lived in southern Mongolia during the Late Cretaceous period. It is a dinosaur species whose full appearance was recently discovered after only its giant forelimbs were found. Made of a material safe for small children, it can be played with safely in the living room or children's room.

A large dinosaur that lived in southern Mongolia during the Late Cretaceous period. In 1965, gigantic forelimbs measuring 2.4 meters long were discovered in the Gobi Desert, and with only a few fragments of bones other than the forelimbs, its appearance remained a mystery for nearly half a century. Recently, a nearly complete skeletal fossil was discovered, revealing its true form. Its head, measuring 1 meter, had a horny beak, and a large number of gastroliths, fish vertebrae, and scales were found near its abdomen, suggesting it was an omnivore. Its pelvis was wide, and its hind limbs were thick and short. This structure prioritized stability over running ability, suggesting it was adapted for walking in wetlands. It had a large, sail-like protrusion on its back, but its purpose is still unknown.
Interview with Supervisor Kazunari Araki
- Deinocheirus, a well-known dinosaur that appeared as the main dinosaur in NHK's "Dinosaur Super World" and at dinosaur exhibitions, has joined our vinyl model lineup. What is your impression of Deinocheirus, Mr. Araki?
- Deinocheirus is now a very familiar dinosaur to children, but when I was young, it was a mysterious dinosaur as only its forelimb fossils had been discovered.
Recently, new fossil discoveries have gradually revealed its true form. So, although I had known its name for a long time, I approached making it as if it were a completely new dinosaur to me. - What were the challenges you faced, what are the highlights, and what are the selling points when sculpting the Deinocheirus vinyl model?
- Many bipedal dinosaur vinyl models are designed to stand on their hind legs and tail, but I designed Deinocheirus to stand with its hind legs and front claws on the ground. This expresses the unique posture and style of Deinocheirus.
- The Deinocheirus vinyl model is colored in a beige tone with yellow wings as an accent. What is your impression of the finished product?
- Deinocheirus was covered in feathers all over its body, giving it the image of a giant bird, so I think the gray-toned color of the soft model was a good fit, and I think the beige tone of this vinyl model is also a good fit.
Of course, it might have had more flashy colors, so if a painted model is released, it might be fun to paint it in your favorite color. - Finally, please give us a comment about the Deinocheirus vinyl model.
- The new dinosaur Deinocheirus. To be honest, even I can't imagine what kind of dinosaur it was. What kind of image do you have?
It might be interesting to pick up the vinyl model and imagine what kind of life this dinosaur lived.
