Interview with supervisor Hirokazu Tokugawa

Five new dinosaurs and ancient creatures have been added to Favorite's stuffed model series. First, please tell us your impression of the finished new collection as a whole.

Each of these five species had different characteristics that we wanted to express as stuffed toys, so the design process presented a different kind of challenge compared to the first five species. Also, this time, two non-dinosaur ancient creatures, Mosasaurus and Pteranodon, were added. Therefore, I believe that when all ten species from the first and second series are displayed together, the overall design range of the models has expanded, allowing us to express more of Favorite's unique charm.

As with the previous project, Mr. Tokugawa oversaw a wide range of aspects, from creating the basic illustrations to expressing the characteristics of the dinosaurs and ancient creatures. Could you please tell us about any particular points you focused on or highlights for each dinosaur?

Since it's a relatively simple animal, I tried to give it a dynamic, curved posture. Stuffed models use a material that is elastic and self-supporting as a plush toy, which I believe allowed us to recreate such a pose.

Regarding the coloring, as with the previous work, it is compiled in calm colors that naturally blend into everyday spaces. Could you tell us about any images or motifs you had in mind when considering the colors for each dinosaur?

Since it's a marine animal, I chose blue to easily evoke that image. Also, for mosasaurs, there's research suggesting that their backs may have been dark and their undersides light, so I've matched the color scheme to that possibility.

Finally, please give a message to those who will pick up this stuffed model.

I thought that the second series would proceed smoothly because we had the experience of product development from the first series, but it was unexpectedly difficult. I rediscovered the wide range of dinosaur and ancient creature forms and the difficulty of designing them as stuffed toys. However, it was still as enjoyable a process this time as it was before. I would be very happy if you could find your favorite among these five new species.
