Giant Squid
Oegopsida / Architeuthidae / Architeuthis
Body length: approx. 6 meters
Habitat: Temperate waters worldwide
The largest individuals can reach 19.8 m in total length, making the Giant Squid one of the largest squid species in the world. Because so few living specimens have been observed, much about its ecology remains unknown. Its enormous eyes, up to about 30 cm in diameter, are among the largest in the animal kingdom and are highly sensitive, allowing it to detect prey in the deep sea. Like other squid, it has ten appendages, including two feeding tentacles. The arms have two rows of suckers and the tentacles have four rows, with hard, saw-like teeth along the edges of the sucker rings. Sucker marks believed to have been left during struggles can be seen on the faces of its predator, the Sperm Whale.
