Classification: Sauropterygia/Plesiosauria/Plesiosauridae
Size: Total length 3–5 meters
Period: Early Jurassic
Plesiosaurus was a long-necked marine reptile that flourished from the Late Triassic into the Early Jurassic. It had a short, sturdy body and swam using large, paddle-like limbs. Gastroliths found between the ribs may have helped control buoyancy and balance. Its eyes were positioned high on the head, like those of a ray, and when its mouth closed, the sharp upper and lower teeth interlocked—features consistent with a reptile that mainly ate fish.
