Styracosaurus
Classification: Ornithischia/Ceratopsia/Ceratopsidae
Size: Total length 5–5.5 meters
Period: Late Cretaceous
Styracosaurus was a ceratopsian dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous. Its frill had six large spikes, with smaller projections below them, and it also had a large horn on its nose. Two large openings in the bony frill reduced its weight, so the spikes and frill are thought to have served more for intimidating predators and rival males than as weapons for defense.
Interview with Supervisor Kazunari Araki
- Styracosaurus is one of the most popular ceratopsians after Triceratops. What image do you have of it?
- It is also my favorite ceratopsian after Triceratops. The six spikes on its frill are especially striking and impressive.
- What was the concept behind the style and sculpting of the Styracosaurus Vinyl Model?
- Ceratopsians are herbivorous dinosaurs with long horns, which give them an aggressive image. I designed it with the idea of having it face off against carnivorous dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus and Spinosaurus.
- The model has a calm blue-based color scheme. What image inspired this choice?
- Among colors different from the other Vinyl Models, I felt blue was perfect for expressing the hard, solid impression of its horns.
- Finally, could you share your comments on this model?
- The horns are durable enough for vigorous play, so go ahead and knock down Tyrannosaurus and Spinosaurus with them!
