The largest and most representative of the armored dinosaurs. Its entire back, from neck to tail, was covered with numerous bone plates and spikes. Its skull was also thick and robust, with triangular horns protruding from the back of its head. The tip of its tail had a hammer-shaped hard bone, believed to be used for defense against carnivorous dinosaurs. Ankylosaur teeth were very small and weak, suggesting they swallowed soft leaves whole and absorbed them in their bodies.
Interview with Supervisor Kazunari Araki
- Ankylosaurus has been added to the lineup of the Dinosaur Vinyl Model Premium Edition. What are your impressions of Ankylosaurus, a representative armored dinosaur?
- To be honest, I had a bit of a苦手意識 (weakness/difficulty) with armored dinosaurs. I had to create many parts of the same shape, like armor on their backs, but varying in size, which was a difficult task for a lazy person like me.
However, recently, very well-preserved fossils have been found, and a dinosaur exhibition featuring armored dinosaurs as the main attraction was held in 2023, so the popularity of armored dinosaurs seems to have suddenly increased, and I've come to like them too (laughs). - Ankylosaurus has already been released in soft model, vinyl model, and mini model versions. For this Premium Edition, were there any differences in sculpting or other details that you paid attention to, apart from the size?
- As I mentioned earlier, for armored dinosaurs, some species have their armor arrangement almost perfectly identified from well-preserved fossils. However, for Ankylosaurus, only parts of the head, club, and armor have been found as fossils, so the reconstruction of the armor's shape and arrangement has changed each time a related species was discovered.
The previous soft model was based on a style from a period when the body width was restored to be somewhat narrow. However, this time, we have sculpted it with a wider body shape and the latest armor arrangement.
However, this might also change if new fossils are discovered again. - For the coloring, we adopted a deep brown color with a sense of weight. What was your impression when you saw the finished product?
- Personally, I had an image of armored dinosaurs being gray. Before making a sample of the Premium Edition's size, I painted a color sample on a smaller figure, and even then I thought, "This color turned out great!" But when I saw the actual painted Ankylosaurus Premium Edition color sample, its size and presence were beyond my imagination.
- Finally, please say a word about the Ankylosaurus Vinyl Model Premium Edition.
- A. Despite the recent popularity of armored dinosaurs, there haven't been many toys or figures of them, but this Ankylosaurus Premium Edition is great! You won't regret buying it. Please get your hands on this dinosaur, like an impregnable fortress that even a T-Rex couldn't breach. My only regret is that if it had been released a little earlier, it would have made it in time for Dinosaur Expo 2023.
