Event Report: The Great Dinosaur Exhibition 2024
We'd like to give you a brief introduction to the venue and shop at the "Giant Dinosaur Exhibition" currently being held at Pacifico Yokohama.
This exhibition is an international touring exhibition of the highly successful exhibition held at the Natural History Museum in London, which closed in January of this year, and Yokohama is the記念すべき (memorable) first venue!
The main exhibit is the full-body skeletal reconstruction of "Patagotitan mayorum," one of the largest sauropods in the world, on display in Japan for the first time.
In addition to this, you can see many other dinosaurs and creatures that are not dinosaurs.

Upon entering, you'll find yourself in the "Gigantism of Organisms" zone.
Here, you'll see "large animals" such as Turiasaurus, the extinct Steppe Mammoth, and still-living polar bears and fin whales.
Additionally, pteranodon skeletons are suspended above, and Quetzalcoatlus skeletons are below, allowing you to enjoy pterosaurs from various angles.

Next is the zone where you can learn about the "Gigantism of Dinosaurs."
While the image of "large dinosaurs" often brings to mind herbivorous sauropods, gigantism also occurred in other theropods. Here, instead of sauropods, the evolution of Tyrannosaurus, Spinosaurus, and Triceratops is explained and exhibited.
The Tyrannosaurus is displayed as a skeleton. The Spinosaurus is a moving model recreating its swimming form underwater.

Furthermore, the Triceratops exhibit has a unique construction where the left half shows the skeleton and muscular system, and the right half shows a life-sized reconstruction, allowing for a different perspective than a pure skeletal display.

Finally, we enter "Titanosaurs: The Lives of the Largest Dinosaurs."
Upon entering, you'll instinctively look up at the full-body skeleton of "Patagotitan."
Its sheer size, combined with its beauty, truly makes you feel the impressiveness of sauropods once again.
I felt that the power it possesses, which cannot be captured by a camera, translates into excitement when seen in person.
At the venue, Patagotitan is explained in detail, so please be sure to check that out as well.

After enjoying the overwhelming presence of "Patagotitan," the exhibition continues with "Various Sauropods."
You can see various sauropods such as Amargasaurus, Barosaurus, Camarasaurus, Fukuititan, and Diplodocus.
With sauropod exhibits on both sides of the deep venue, it's an enjoyable exhibition just looking from the entrance to the back.

The final section of the exhibition hall, titled "The End of Giant Dinosaurs," features Edmontosaurus, Tsintaosaurus, Gallimimus, and the armored dinosaurs Crichtonpelta and Denversaurus.
In particular, Denversaurus is a type of nodosaurid, an armored dinosaur without a club on its tail, while Crichtonpelta is a type of ankylosaurid, an armored dinosaur with a club on its tail. Since two specimens are displayed close together, it might be interesting to compare them.

From here, I'll introduce the special shop. As it's the Giant Dinosaur Exhibition, the special shop is also a considerably large venue.
In addition to the official catalog exclusive to the venue, there's a wide array of other venue-exclusive products and collaboration goods.
Of course, there are also dinosaur goods other than the limited edition items.
Favorite brand products such as vinyl models, painted models, keyrings, and mini skulls are also available for purchase.

Also, from inside the shop, you can get a good view of the Turiasaurus and Steppe Mammoth skeletons, so I encourage everyone to look up a bit, not just at the goods.

This exhibition also includes an attached café.
You might consider taking a break there before choosing souvenirs.
Please note that the exhibition runs until Saturday, September 14, 2024.
