The fact that they have survived on Earth from ancient times to the present day, with almost no change in appearance. They are called "living fossils" and evoke a long history and a sense of romance. I want to feel the breath of ancient times, together with nature.

"Polypterus endlicheri"
Polypterus species, inhabiting freshwater regions of Africa, are survivors of a group that flourished in the past and are known as "living fossils." Their most distinctive feature, and the origin of their name, is the dorsal fin composed of small, connected finlets called dorsal spines. Their bodies are covered with special hard scales, and the base of their pectoral fins is fleshy, allowing them to support their bodies in water like the forelegs of tetrapods. Their swim bladders have a structure similar to lungs, enabling them to survive even in harsh, oxygen-poor environments caused by dry seasons by lifting their heads out of the water and taking in atmospheric oxygen. Endlicheri are among the largest Polypterus species, reaching over 70cm in length. The striped patterns on their bodies vary widely among individuals, which is one reason for their popularity.

"Their dinosaur-like appearance"
The dorsal fin of Polypterus species, which consists of independently arranged small finlets, is unique among fish and has a dinosaur-like impact. Among the 12 existing species of Polypterus, Polypterus endlicheri is the most popular, an ancient fish with striking, sharp band patterns. While the patterns are highly varied, they embody the ideal individual pattern envisioned by supervisor Mr. Igarashi. Additionally, the precisely reproduced skull pattern carved into the head is another highlight.
