Size: Approx. 20-40cm in length
Habitat: Hokkaido, Kyushu, Pacific coast north of Kanto, and Sea of Japan coast
Also written as "山女" or "山女魚" due to its feminine beauty. It is a representative stream fish and popular among many anglers. Its body is adorned with blue parr marks, which vary in shape among individuals. The markings gradually fade as the fish grows. It spends its entire life in the same river and inhabits cold water areas upstream, but lives in lower reaches than Iwana. It preys on crustaceans, small fish, aquatic insects, and terrestrial insects that fall into the river.
