In Japan, the red sea bream has long been considered an auspicious fish due to its vibrant red color and its name, "madai," which sounds like "medetai" (auspicious). It has been an essential high-end ingredient for celebrations and Shinto festivals.
Compared to other fish, its taste is not strongly pungent or peculiar. Its firm white flesh and slow rate of spoilage are also distinctive features, making it enjoyable in a wide variety of dishes.
Fishing
Wild red sea bream are highly popular targets for sea fishing. The fishing season is considered to be spring, when they come to shallow waters for spawning, and autumn, when they move to deeper waters in preparation for winter.
Large individuals can reach up to 120 cm in length, making them one of the most beloved targets for Japanese anglers.
