Japanese Dinosaurs, in a Japanese way, Vol. 3

To celebrate Japan's dinosaurs, I tried to depict Fukuiaurus with a Japanese aesthetic.

〈Fukuiaurus〉
Fukuiaurus was the first dinosaur discovered in Japan to have its full skeleton restored. Fossils of its backbone, tail, and teeth were found during excavations that began in 1989.

〈Ichimatsu Pattern〉
I tried to give Fukuiaurus a Japanese look by dressing it in a kimono adorned with the "Ichimatsu pattern." The Ichimatsu pattern is a type of grid pattern, featuring two colors of squares arranged alternately and systematically. In modern terms, it's similar to a checkered pattern. This pattern gained popularity when Ichimatsu Sanogawa I, a Kabuki actor from the Edo period, wore hakama with alternating white and indigo squares on stage. Ichimatsu continued to favor this pattern, and it became a popular design for kimonos. Initially called "ishidatami" (stone pavement), it later became known as the "Ichimatsu pattern" and became its common name. Tracing back further, it was also used on the clothing of haniwa (clay figures) from the Kofun period, existing as a woven pattern in Japan for a long time. Currently, the Ichimatsu pattern is also the motif for the emblem of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Ichimatsu pattern continues to be cherished as a Japanese-style pattern that expresses a distinctly Japanese image.
