They are often called polar bears because their entire body appears to be covered with white fur. It is the largest species in the bear family. They vary in size depending on their habitat, with the population in the Chukchi Sea in Russia being the largest.
Polar bears inhabit ice floes and coastal areas, moving south in winter as the ice floes move south, and north in summer. In some areas, they build well-ventilated dens to escape direct sunlight, weather and external enemies.
The head is smaller than that of other bear species, but it has a long neck. They also have short auricles, which are adapted to cold climates. Their long necks and small, streamlined heads are considered adaptations for swimming, allowing them to swim in icy waters for hours. They also have the best eyesight of all bears.
This is the most carnivorous of the omnivorous bears, with more specialized teeth than brown bears.
