A small pterosaur that lived during the Early Jurassic period. Its large head had a beak with two types of teeth, large and small, which is the origin of its name. Based on the shape of its jaw, analysis of its teeth, and its limited flying ability, it is believed to have preyed on fish, insects, and small vertebrates. Although its wings were small for a pterosaur, its fore and hind legs were well developed. It is believed to have used its legs to climb to high places and then glided down towards its prey, clinging to trees or cliffs with its claws.
Interview with supervisor, Kazunari Araki
- Dimorphodon, long known among dinosaur and paleontology enthusiasts and now widely recognized thanks to its appearance in movies, has joined our soft model lineup. What are your impressions of Dimorphodon?
- Well, Dimorphodon is a familiar pterosaur, even appearing in Zdeněk Burian's art books from the 1960s. In fact, I remember making one for Kaiyodo's mini-series about 40 years ago (laughs).
And since it appeared in the movie Jurassic World and was made into a toy, it might be more famous than Rhamphorhynchus (*) to young people today. - What were the challenging aspects and key points when sculpting the Dimorphodon soft model?
- Unlike Pteranodon and Quetzalcoatlus, Dimorphodon is a type of pterosaur with sharp teeth and a tail, similar to Rhamphorhynchus. I paid attention to features such as the interlocking of the upper and lower teeth, which were likely used to grasp insects and prevent them from escaping, and the diamond shape at the end of the tail, which probably functioned as a vertical stabilizer during flight.
- What was your vision for the posing and base of the model?
- As with other pterosaur figures, the pose depicts it flying gracefully. Similarly, the base is designed to resemble a rocky outcrop.
- Were there any specific considerations for the overall coloring of the Dimorphodon soft model?
- Dimorphodon is a well-known pterosaur from ancient times, and it was often depicted with rather subdued colors. However, thinking of it as a creature similar to birds of the Mesozoic era, I thought it might have been more colorful, so I tried a bolder color scheme with blue and added patterns to its wings.
