Classification: Penguins / Penguinidae / Cape
Habitat: Coast of South America
The Humboldt penguin is a medium-sized penguin, about 70 cm in length, and is the most commonly kept temperate penguin in Japan. They live in the relatively warm coastal areas of South America from Peru to Chile (along the Humboldt Current). Although penguins are often thought of as living in places like Antarctica, Humboldt penguins are quite tolerant of heat and do not like extreme cold. Humboldt penguins can be kept in many zoos and aquariums in Japan without requiring high temperature control, and are often seen there. Since members of the Humboldt penguin genus look very similar, the key to distinguishing them is the thick black band on the chest, the thin white band on the head, and the wide pink area around the eyes. The pink around the eyes is exposed skin, not feathers. The beak is black with a gray bar pattern. Nests are dug in tunnels under the ground or in rocky crevices and caves on the coast. In northern Peru and Chile, they sometimes dig burrows at the base of cacti on dry beaches. They are feared to be extinct because their population is decreasing due to marine pollution, environmental destruction of spawning grounds, and overfishing of small fish as food.
