Habitat: Middle Pleistocene - Late Pleistocene
The Kenaga mammoth is a type of extinct elephant that lived from about 400,000 to 4,000 years ago. The long hair covering its entire body and its huge, curved tusks are impressive. It had body features adapted to cold weather, such as long body hair, thick subcutaneous tissue, and small ears. The causes of extinction have been discussed: climate change, hunting by humans, and explosions from celestial bodies flying from space. Individuals preserved in ice have been found in the permafrost layers of Siberia, and genetic and anatomical studies of their bodies are underway.
