Vol.31 "Lost World: The Film"
This time, I will introduce movies and TV dramas based on "The Lost World" in chronological order.
Like the movie "Journey to the Center of the Earth" featured in Treasure House Vol. 54, there are many "huh???" items, but enjoying them as they are is what being a true enthusiast is all about. By the way, in all these works, heroines who don't appear in the original work somehow join the expedition team with some excuse, and sometimes there are even scantily clad beauties among the natives, but of course, beautiful female characters are essential in adventure movies.
1925 "The Lost World" (USA)
This is a masterpiece that needs no further explanation and remains in film history. It is the origin of all dinosaur movies. It seems to have had a great impact when it was released in Japan as well. For example, in the novel "Giant Dragons and Pirates" introduced in New Treasure House Vol. 29, there is a conversation that goes, "The movie Lost World I saw at Hibiya Public Hall, etc." However, unfortunately, I don't have any film magazines from that time. I searched online for information on this and found an article written by a Conan Doyle researcher.

In the 1980s, the dream-like machine known as the videotape recorder became popular in general households. I acquired one and immediately found a β-tape version of this movie at an import video shop in Tokyo. I believe it was quite expensive, but I bought it with great joy and excitement and watched it with tears, if I recall correctly. I still cherish the tape, though I'm not sure if it can be played anymore. (Image 1) shows the package.

Nowadays, the domestic DVD version is readily available, but unfortunately, it doesn't come with any bonus features. The imported version is a better deal as it includes cut dinosaur scenes and other extras. In particular, the laserdisc version I obtained previously was packed with bonuses, including cut scenes and related short films, as well as the sheet music for a love song titled "THE LOST WORLD" (Image 2), which was said to have been inspired by the movie. As a professional, I couldn't ignore it, so with the help of my jazz colleague Kazuko Date, I tried playing it in a jazz style (♪THE LOST WORLD).
