The special exhibition "Great Extinctions: The Big Five of Life's History" will be held at the Nagoya City Science Museum (Naka-ku, Nagoya) from March 20 (Fri/Holiday), 2026 to June 14 (Sun), 2026.

In the 4 billion years since life first appeared, Earth has faced numerous threats to life. However, life has overcome these crises, and new groups have prospered in place of those that went extinct, leading to diverse evolution. In other words, mass extinctions can be seen as phenomena that promoted the prosperity of life. This exhibition unravels the five largest "mass extinction" events (known as "The Big Five") through various evidence preserved in fossils and rocks, tracing the history of evolution as living creatures fought for survival. Supervised by 10 researchers from the National Museum of Nature and Science specializing in ancient organisms, volcanoes, paleoclimate, and paleoceanography, the exhibition approaches the mysteries of the five mass extinctions from various angles.
