Quetzalcoatlus was the largest pterosaur known to have lived, inhabiting the Earth during the Late Cretaceous period. Its bones were hollow for lightness, and it is estimated to have weighed considerably less than a modern giraffe, despite being the same size. Fossilized footprints suggest it walked on all fours on the ground, and for flight, it is thought to have launched itself vigorously like a pole vaulter, using its long forelegs as a pivot from a four-legged stance on the ground.
