Allosaurus

Allosaurus

One of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs of the Jurassic period. Its distinguishing features included a knob-like protrusion above its eyes, a large head over 1 meter long, powerful hind limbs, and well-developed forelimbs. It maintained body balance with its large head and a long, straight, heavy tail. It was more primitive than Tyrannosaurids and Troodontids in that its carpals were not lunate, the anterior process of its ilium was poorly developed, and its second and fourth metatarsals did not meet. The largest specimens were comparable in size to Tyrannosaurus, but their skeletons were not as robust as those of Tyrannosaurids. Allosaurus's forelimbs were not as weak as Tyrannosaurus's and its well-developed three fingers had sharp claws, which would have been powerful weapons. It is believed that when catching prey, it would lie in ambush in bushes and launch a surprise attack by swinging its powerful upper jaw.

English name: Allosaurus

Allosaurus skeleton, skull Knob-like protrusion

Allosaurus is characterized by a knob-like protrusion (crest) above its eyes. The shape and size of these protrusions are thought to have varied between individuals.

Three fingers with powerful claws

Its well-developed forelimbs have three fingers with large, sharp claws (curved claws). These would have been powerful weapons, allowing it to firmly grasp its prey.

Allosaurus teeth

It possessed numerous sharp, large teeth that curved backward and had a lens-like cross-section. Fossils of Apatosaurus bones with Allosaurus bite marks have been discovered. This suggests that Allosaurus attacked and preyed on the giant herbivorous dinosaur, Apatosaurus.
